A Study of the Book of Romans

This Good News tells us how God makes us right in His sight. This is accomplished from start to finish by faith. -Romans 1:16

Study Times:

Most Sunday morning classes will be participating in the Saved by Faith studies at their normal Sunday School hour. In addition, three new classes are forming: Sundays at 9:45 AM; Sundays at 11:15 AM; and Wednesdays at 6:30 PM

A Church-wide Study

This fall through early spring of next year, hundreds of MDPC members and friends are exploring Romans together. If you’re in a Sunday School now, it’s likely your class leaders have signed on for this verse by verse, paragraph by paragraph study of Romans.

Three New Classes Forming

If you’re currently unaffiliated, join one of these newly formed Sunday or weekday study groups:

  • A Sunday morning “Pastor’s Class” at 9:45 and 11:15 AM in the Amphitheater. Clay Brown willl be kicking these classes off by teaching at both hours in August and September.
  •  A Wednesday evening intergenerational midweek class will meet at 6:30, led on a rotating basis by seminarian Jeanmarie Tade, seminary graduate Kay Atchison, Teacher in Residence Martha Moore, and Trevor Harris, MDPC Young Adult Discipleship Director.
A Counter Cultural Study

Everything in our culture screams at us that “We get only what we earn.” We’re taught that success in school, careers, and even personal relationships is determined by how hard we work. Unsurprisingly, this thinking can poison our relationship with God quite easily, leaving us convinced that our actions make us right with God.

In his letter to the Romans, the Apostle Paul flips this idea on its head. He proclaims we are made right with God not through our efforts, but through our trust in Jesus Christ, the crucified and risen Lord. Our culture is wrong; we are saved by faith – and faith alone. This is  the Good News, and its implications are staggering. Therefore, we must study this book!

A Life Changing Study

Millions of people throughout the ages have been changed through the message of Romans. Some of them are famous.

  • A young man named Augustine, living in debauchery, hears a voice telling him to “pick up and read.” He obeys by reading Romans and his life is never the same.
  • Martin Luther, an earnest monk trying to earn his way into heaven, encounters the Good News through Romans. The Protestant Reformation is born.
  • John Wesley, a disheartened missionary walking through London, hears a sermon from Romans. His heart is “strangely warmed,” and the Wesleyan movement takes off.

But famous figures aside, people today are being made new by the message of Romans. Every day people are saved by faith in Jesus Christ alone, and then they live by faith in Him as His faithful disciples. Simply put, the message of Romans will change our lives as we study it. It is how God operates through His Word and Spirit!
