Speaker: Scott McClelland, President of HEB Food & Drug
Scott McClelland is a former Clerk of Session at MDPC who currently serves as President of HEB Food and Drug. The food giant has a well-earned reputation for supporting education, disaster relief, military appreciation, and hunger relief in Texas. Scott received his undergraduate degree from the University of Southern California and further management training at Harvard. Scott and his wife Soraya are extremely active in many different charitable endeavors.

How Thanksgiving Came to Be
Lisa Pennington and her husband, David Furlow, both history buffs and retired attorneys, tell the story of the first Harvest Festival (Thanksgiving), held in the fall of 1621, and how it led to 50 years of peaceful cooperation between the English Pilgrims and the indigenous Wampanoag tribe. Lisa is a descendant of several Mayflower Pilgrims.

Ryan Patrick, former Presiding Judge of the 177th Texas state district and immediate past District Attorney for the Southern District of Texas, will share stories from his time as a Judge and his time bringing many federal cases to trial in Texas. He currently is a partner at Haynes and Boone LLP in Houston.

Meliza Gómez is busy all the time, but especially on Sunday mornings when she leads MDPC worship in both English and Spanish-language services. She is currently MDPC’s Contemporary Music Director and Music Director for Spanish-language ministries and holds a degree in voice performance from North Texas State University.

How We Got Here: Key Issues in 20th-century Christianity
Laurien Hook doesn’t consider herself an expert on Christian history, but you’d never know it from her talent and passion for teaching it. Laurien serves as MDPC Adult Studies Director, teaching and writing curriculum for Word and Worship and other programs. A native Houstonian, Laurien holds a B.A. in Biblical Languages and a Master of Arts in Theology from Fuller Theological Seminary.

Houston Hunger and How the Houston Food Bank is standing in the Gap
Phil Hawk is Vice Chair of the Houston Food Bank and former CEO of Team. An engineering grad of Duke with a Management degree from Harvard, he is a longtime MDPC member.
